At Troutlore we continue to strive to source the best range of fly tying materials from around the world for Australian fly tyers. And we love deer hair.

Because of this, we continue to find more options for those of you who love to work with deer hair. As you all know, there is deer hair and then there is the right deer hair for the job. It’s not good using deer belly hair to tie a stimulator wing, and you’ll be at it for hours trying to spin up a big hair body with comparadun hair. But, there are plenty of subtler differences that make tying certain patterns so much easier.

Some notable solutions include teh following of our favourites:

The Lost Fly Premium Deer Hair is ideal for tying shaving brushes. It is hand selected by Brent at The Lost Fly for just this purpose. Sourced from Tasmania and available to all of us on the mainland, this is a great quality hair for tight binding with optimal flaring.

Nature’s Spirit Stimulator Deer Hair is, as the name suggests, just perfect for tying stimulator wings. It’s a soft, thing deer hair with very even fiber lengths, and as such has tip barring that lines up nicely when stacked. It has a good length to it and doesn’t flair too much when you don;t want it to.

Nature’s Spirit Deer Belly is quite the opposite from this and, with a thick fiber and soft core, it flairs out perfectly for tying bug hair bodies on terrestrials, poppers, divers and other similar flies. The natural white colour of the belly hair also allows for beuatiful, vibrant bright colours to be offered when the dying process is affected by the base colour.

Aside from these though, we keep a large range of deer hairs for every other purpose. There;s natural and bleached options, as well as dyed over natural and dyed over white options. And of course, we have a number of comparadun options, for this tiny little dry flies that require a very fine hair. You can find the full range of deer hair kept in stock and available to ship right here.
