It was a few years ago that I wrote about our top five dubbings for weed flies and at the time, the much loved Australian fly tying company Tiewell was sitting in hibernation. But, new investment and management at Tiewell has made it possible for Australia’s favourite weed fly material to be back on the Australian fly tying market.

At Troutlore, we couldn’t be happier to offer the full range of Tiewell Weed Dub dubbings to Australian fly tyers. The range includes the classic and ever popular Green, as well as a softer, more subtle Olive offering. On top of this, a dark Brown is available for adding some variety to your flies as well as a Mix for something different. And, at the delight of many of our customers, the brighter Chartreuse colour was added to the range last year.

In difference to the dubbings previously mentioned in our earlier article, Tiewell Weed Dub offers a translucsent finish that captured light in the water and moves freely just like real weed does. It has just enough shine and sparkle to it to reflect the light and catch the fish’s eye. Whilst it isn’t a complete substitute for the other popular weed dubbing options like Hareline’s Ice Dub in Caddis Green, it certainly brings another element to the game for the avid luderick fly fisher.

So, whilst the Tiewell Weed Dub is the obvious choice and ‘go-to’ dubbing for luderick weed flies, there are still plenty of other options to further expand your offering. Be sure to have a read of the previous article if you’re looking for a few other ideas.
