Description

Hareline Elk Mane hair is a highly buoyant hair that has just the appropriate amount of flare to make excellent backwings on dry caddis patterns and stoneflies. The mane of an elk is a great fly tying material for stacked wings on large stoneflies, steelhead skating patterns, and more. It is fine, long, buoyant, and unlike deer hair, this hair has minimum compression for more controlled flare. Perfect to use on the larger patterns like Stimulators, Hoppers & October Caddis.

Elk Mane is also great for creating durable tails for dry flies as it’s easier to use and more durable than traditional feathers.  Many of you will use Peccary hair, when it is available, or Moose Mane hair for wrapping bodies in a quill style. For small flies, this hair is yet another alternative that offers a very flexible, easy to wrap texture and delivers a different look to other options. For mosquito patterns and other quill type bodies on dry & wet flies, you can’t beat the long and fine hair found in the mane section of an elk.

Of course, we stock a wide range of elk hair products to suit every application in your fly tying. All of it can be found in the Elk Category of the Troutlore Flytying Store. If you can’t find a product you are specifically looking for, get in touch and we will see if it can be sourced, and kept in stock. Plus, you can keep up to date with new releases through our newsletter and social media outlets.
