Bead Chain, or Ball Chain, is an ideal substitute for dumbbells on your flies when you don't want as much weight, or when you want smaller round eyes like those on damsels, mudeyes and similar insects.
Be it small wet flies, medium streamers, bigger bass bugs or large saltwater flies, bead chain allows you to create a different profile with less weight than dumbbells.
Ideal for saltwater flies, trout flies, and carp flies.
14" of bead chain per package :
- Small - 7/64" - Minimum 48 flies
- Medium - 1/8" - Minimum 36 flies
- Large - 5/32" - Minimum 32 flies
We know, seriously, that it is important to not over weight our flies. This is especially true for flats fishing where a too-heavy fly will not be eaten by bonefish or permit. On the other hand, a not heavily enough weighted fly will not reach the proper depth in time for the fish to see it. Bottom line, even though bead chain has been around forever, it has a revered place in our fly bench.
These metal bead chains for are still popular for bass, streamers, and saltwater patterns. I love to use them for damsel patterns too, offering just a little weight to slowly sink the fly, but not so much that it smashed the water's surface.
Of course, if you want to create all sorts of natural looking streamer fly patterns, then our ever growing range of natural hairs and furs is the ideal place to start for something different to the synthetic option. Don’t just settle on looking in the Hare & Rabbit category when you’re chasing quality winging and body furs, check out the Specialty Species Category of the Troutlore Flytying Store as well.
